Description: .This is a VINTAGE 33 1/3 record to Haitian cult style VOODOO Robert Drasnin Exotic "TIKI" Music From Polynesia - Vinyl Rec, dated 1959 L1679 The composer of this music was born a comparatively safe distance from Voodoo rites in Charleston, West Virginia. Drasnin spent his boyhood in Los Angeles where, after experience with the orchestras of Skinney Ennis and Les Brown, he returned from Army service after the Korean War to study serious composition. His instructors at UCLA and USC were noted composers Lukas Foss and Ingolf Dahl. The romantic concept, "There's magic in music," has oft been spoken to account for the start of a love affair. But there's a very special magic in the music of this record - Voodoo magic, the necromancy and mysterious rites of the eerie Haitian cult that has stirred imagination for hundreds of years. Brought to the isle of Haiti by slaves from the depths of an Africa then known to the world as "the dark continent," Voodoo became symbolic of the mysteries hidden behind the seemingly impenetrable face of a land little understood to Western man in the middle ages. Among Haitian slaves the cult flourished, making that Caribbean country the Voodoo stronghold. This music of magic, above everything, is redolent with the caressing quality of the Caribbean. It evokes half wakeful dreams of balmy evenings beneath softly swaying palms, gentle breezes brushing the treetops from a calm indigo ocean and, over all, a pervading sense of mystery. What brilliant 32-year-old composer Robert Drasnin has accomplished here is to capture the Voodoo myth in a shifting variety of musical ways. Though the mood varies from track to track, underneath stirs the relentless throb of Voodoo drums, at times barely suggested, sometimes dominating all else with their exotic rhythms. Robert Drasnin's mastery of musical sorcery is clearly evident throughout the dozen selections in this album. His warm woodwinds combine with primitive percussion and piano to achieve a stimulating exoticism heightened by the haunting voice of a woman drifting along the rhythms in Orinoco. Mirage is a brighter image enlivened by fast-moving bongo drums combined with marimba and Drasnin's piccolo before closing on a fadeout. The languorous Warm Night Wind, with piano caressing the theme, is in dramatic contrast to the album's title composition, a raw and primitive piece with turbulent rhythms setting off the husky, provocative female voice. In a mood somewhat different from the other selections is the ballad, You, with the wordless voice of a woman carrying the modern mood and maintaining the romantic motif with piano and flute. And in Enchantment the aura of lush love is further sustained by the composer's use of piano, alto flute and various percussion instruments. PLEASE EXAMINE PHOTOS CAREFULLY TO SEE DETAILS.
