However, the movement does not run as the crown/stem does not engage the winding mechanism. Given that this is a manual wind movement it's possible that fixing the crown/stem issue will reveal a working movement but considering that the movement shows no signs of ever having been serviced it should be expected that a complete overhaul will be required.***********This seldom seen vintage 1960's Lafayette diver has a black "T SWISS MADE T" signed dial that shows wear, particularly around the edges. The original lume on the dial and hands, which emits a faint, short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a perfectly matching warm buttermilk patina. There is a nearly visually imperceptible crack in the hour hand lume. The black bezel, which shows wear and rotates smoothly bidirectionally, presents nicely. The chrome-plated case shows honest wear and brassing. The outside of the case back is stamped "ELECTRONICALLY TESTED ANTISHOCK | SWISS MADE | STAINLESS STEEL BACK WATERPROOF | CHROME PLATED TOP ANTIMAGNETIC." The inside of the case back is stamped "R. GSELL ET CO. INC." The crystal is heavily scratched. The 7 jewels unadjusted Swiss "LAFAYETTE WATCH Co" EB 8021N manual wind movement is clean but does not run. While the crown/stem pulls out it can be pushed back in, allowing for the date and time to be set. This movement does not have a quickset date function. The non-screwdown crown is brassed and the stem does not engage the winding mechanism. Given that this is a manual wind movement it's possible that fixing the crown/stem issue will reveal a working movement but considering that it shows no signs of ever having been serviced (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or on the movement) it should be expected that a complete overhaul will be required. This watch measures approximately 35 mm excluding the crown, approximately 38.5 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 7 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 9.5 mm. Given that this watch does not run and considering the movement shows no signs of ever having been serviced a complete overhaul is required. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now.
