The Baldwin BrothersReturn Of The Golden Rhodes Review By Chad Grischow: If you have ever played Lumines Live! just to chill out to the laid back electro lounge funk, The Baldwin Brothers are for you. Their groove-heavy latest is full of chilled lounge music, enriched by '70s disco and fresh electronic tones; playing out like a soundtrack to the addictive puzzler. The mostly instrumental album features the occasional guest vocalist, to keep you from falling into a funky voiceless abyss; although, you probably would not mind. From the laid-back cool breeze of "Just Me (On The Dance Floor)" to Jason Hinkle's nimble-fingered bass line of "Air Is Invisible", the funky electronic quartet aim to please and succeed. The album title comes from the T.J. Widner's weapon of choice; a Rhodes is an electronic piano, which the band uses rather than guitar. A piano may not sound like a rocking replacement for a guitar, but one listen to the hazy riff on "When My Brother Had A Datsun" will quickly change your mind. Easily mistakable for a Gorillaz cut, the stuttering conclusion and easy flow of rapper Julio Davi only adds to the irresistible nature of the song. Rubbery bass lines and light playful keys contrast each other well over a trippy dance beat on the album's opener, "Right On (Feelin' Good)". Most dance-ready of the set is the soulful funky ride of "Bus Stop Hustle", with an uplifting sampled, "Give 'em a hand", hook that demands listeners get up and move along to. The up-tempo rush of "A Matter Of Time" is driven home by the rapid-fire flow of rapper Sarai, creating a stunning lounge-funk-rap song. While scratches are sparingly used throughout the effort, they serve as well placed sonic jabs over the floating atmospheric lounge tones of "Go From There". Two of the more interesting selections come in the form of less lounge-inspired fare. The rich soulful vocals of Basement Jaxx's Lisa Kekaula give the old-school soul song "Leave The Past Behind" a mellow-chill that breaks up the album without sounding out of place. Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens Of The Stone Age) brings the album to a somber haunting conclusion on "The Party's Over". Lanegan's stark vocals and picked guitar ground the atmospheric cool of the music. The Return Of The Golden Rhodes will quench your thirst for funky grooves repeatedly; never missing a beat, and never disappointing. While some of it falls into unremarkable territory, as on atmospheric lounging "Gravity's Fone" and late Marvin Gaye dream-soul inspired "The Snow Falls", as a whole, it is an infinitely listenable and enjoyable funky ride. Next time someone asks who the coolest Baldwin Brother is, you can say hands-down it is the band."
