Humboldt County, the largest of the redwood-producing counties, has always been the chief support of the redwood lumber industry. The big factor that allowed the rapid and huge expansion of numerous mills in Humboldt County was the building of railroads, first used to supply logs to the mills on Humboldt Bay. The railroads enabled the companies to move away from tidewater and to build their mills nearer to the source of supply. And they allowed the mills to log at a greater distance from the streams. The railroads can be given the major credit for the rapid expansion of the industry from about 1875 to approximately 1940. Trucks gradually took over the work done by the railroads. The construction of logging railroads was very expensive, and it was much cheaper to build roads for trucks. To the men who have been brought up on steam railroading and have worked on logging railroads in their prime, it is heart-breaking to see the steam engines disappear. From conversations with old steam railroaders, here are a few comments: "Just the sight and sound of a steam locomotive, working hard pulling a long train of huge redwood logs up a grade with smoke and exhaust steam blasting skyward from stack and the sound of the whistle and bell ringing at a grade crossing is something you'll never forget." "In a railroad camp just the thrill and exhilaration of watching a Shay heading for the woods on a cold frosty morning, a long string of logging cars pushing noisily after, whistle blowing, echoing sharply through the timber, is a majestic sight that will not be seen or heard again. This documented historical-pictorial book of the redwood logging railroads of the past will help to preserve a chapter in western logging that has disappeared in the American West.
