We are pleased to offer this rarely seen Cuban-made PALESTINE solidarity poster, printed in 1967, the year of the so-called "Six Day War" after which Israel began its occupation of Palestinian lands in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, as well as the Sinai Peninsula and most of the Syrian Golan Heights. This black and white poster, illustrated with a photo of an impoverished child, shows us how little has changed in the Israel-Palestine conflict, which is as volatile as ever, six decades after this graphic was designed in Havana. The poster was printed and distributed by the Havana-based Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa & Latin America (OSPAAAL), which was founded in 1966 to demonstrate solidarity among socialist countries and promote various independence movements and other causes, including U.S. civil rights. OSPAAAL printed many of its posters in several languages, including Spanish, English, French and Arabic. This offset poster in this listing is the French-language version of a Palestine solidarity poster issued by OSPAAAL in 1967. The poster is titled (in French) "Deuil por la conscience humaine" (Mourning for the Human Consciousness). The poster also notes (in French) that May 15th has been designated as a world day of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Notably, the poster was designed by Tony Evora (1937-2017), one of the most prominent graphic artists in the early years of the 1959 Cuban revolution. In addition to his work for OSPAAAL, Tony Evora was artistic director of the Cuban Book Institute. His career in Havana was relatively short-lived, however, as he moved in the 1980s to the United Kingdom, where he became director of the arts, music and publications department at Oxford Brookes University. He later moved to Spain, where his work focused largely on Cuban music and its relationship to the Afro Cuban religion known as Santeria. Evora died in Spain in 2017. OSPAAAL closed its doors in June 2019 after a long run as a publisher of imaginative Cuban poster art. OSPAAAL posters can be found in museum and gallery collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., as well as in numerous books about Cuban graphic art. Overall condition of this poster is good with minor imperfections, including some ink runoff on the edge of the bottom border. The poster does not have any tears or pin holes, which are common on many vintage OSPAAAL posters.
