Description: Nixon (movie)SynopsisIn 1972, men were arrested in the Watergate building where the Democratic Party had offices. The resulting scandal dates back to United States President Richard Nixon. A few months later, in December 1973, Alexander Haig, White House chief of staff, brought him audio cassettes. The two discuss the Watergate scandal and the resulting chaos.By listening to certain tapes again, Richard Nixon remembers many passages from his life and his political career. He revisits his defeat against John F. Kennedy in the 1960 presidential election or that against Pat Brown for governor of California in 1962. While he announced his retirement after that, he would return to the top a few years later during the 1968 presidential election. In difficult times, the president also remembers his childhood in Whittier, California and the deaths of two of his brothers due to tuberculosis, as well as his education at Whittier College. He thinks back to his mother, very religious, whom he presents as “a saint”. His presidency was very marked by the Vietnam War and the opposition it unleashed on American soil, particularly among young people. These protests took a dramatic turn during the Kent State University shootings in May 1970. In 1971, he was also implicated in the Pentagon Papers by The New York Times and then The Washington Post. Richard Nixon also tried during his mandate to improve relations with China and the USSR, by personally meeting Mao Zedong in 1972 as well as Leonid Brezhnev in 1973. During these difficult times, Richard Nixon could count on the sometimes fluctuating support of his wife, Pat, as well as that of his daughters (Tricia and Julie). The president is also supported by close advisors: Henry Kissinger, John Ehrlichman and HR Haldeman.Shaken by the Watergate scandal, Nixon finally resigned in August 1974 and left the White House by helicopter. At the beginning of the end credits are original sequences of his national funeral in Yorba Linda, the city of his birth, attended by all the former American presidents still alive at the time (Gerald Ford , JIMMY Carter, Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush ).
