Description: Jack Dempsey - 1909 James Jeffries Playing Cards, Jack of Clubs - SGC 6 On the Boxer - John Edward Kelly (1862 –1895) was an Irish-born American bare-knuckle fighter, better known as Nonpareil Jack Dempsey, who was the first holder of the World Middleweight Championship (1884–1891). Dempsey, who moved to the United States as a young child, was a proficient wrestler before he began his career as a boxer. For his first fight he gave his name as Jack Dempsey, and he fought under that name thereafter. (Fighting under an assumed name was not uncommon, as boxing was generally illegal.) Years later a young heavyweight named William Harrison Dempsey paid tribute to the great bare-knuckle fighter by boxing under the same name, Jack Dempsey. Since two great fighters are known by this name, the first is also referred to by his ring name, the Nonpareil (Middle French - “unequaled”). Dempsey won the middleweight title on July 30, 1884, by defeating George Fulljames in Staten Island, New York. He held the title for over six years. Sadly, Dempsey died at age 32 of tuberculosis. Dempsey was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954, and into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992. On the Set - Released in 1909 by the W.P. Jeffries Company, the James Jeffries Playing Cards were standard-sized cards showcasing images of popular early 20th-century boxers. Each card displayed a boxer alongside a card number and suit on the front. The backs featured a consistent design: a black and white portrait of James Jeffries within an ornate oval, set against a striking red background.
