Description: FOLK ART HAND FORGED IRON FOLDING FISH SHAPED KNIFE + FID LATE 1700s-EARLY 1800s RARE SMALL SIZE SAILOR FOLK ART HAND FORGED IRON FOLDING FISH SHAPED KNIFE WITH FID AND 2 ORIGINAL ATTACHMENT RINGS LATE 1700’s – EARLY 1800’s This is an early hand forged Iron Folk Art Sailor's Maritime pocket "fish" knife, dating from the late 1700's to the early 1800's. The end spike was created by taking a piece of Iron about 3/16" thick; and forging it at the end to create a spike ( also called a fid, made in different sizes and used to untangle knots in rope). Then the adjoining part of Iron was flattened and folded over to create the knife handle. The blade appears to be cut from thin sheet Iron and forged onto the end with an Iron rivet on both sides. The handle has a couple of hand chiseled "gills" at the end, next to the rivet, which resembles an eye. Thus, the shape of the hilt is fish shaped, with an eye and applied gills. This pattern knife was made in many different sizes, and this is the smallest size I have seen; made for a sailor on a wooden ship with sails & rigging. These knives were inexpensive at the time, and an affordable and necessary tool for every deck hand. This pattern knife was never made with any spring and operated on friction. Like most of these pieces, this piece no longer has any friction, but could be adjusted by closing the sides of the hilt inward to create tension. The depth of the slot on the top of the handle acts as a blade stop, allowing cutting pressure to be applied in the open blade position with the thumb in front of the eyelet at the ricasso. This works fine when cutting rope; but without any downward pressure being applied, the blade moves freely from the open to closed position, as there is no spring nor locking device. The knife would have been hung from a lanyard, and in that position, the blade falls inside the protective hilt like a sheath. This style knife is known to have been made in France, England and Spain; all Maritime powerhouse Nations during this period; but these simple knife / tools could easily have been made elsewhere. All of these knives are old as dirt, have extensive wear, rust, aging, et al., and are found in as is condition, which adds credibility and appeal to collectors. Almost all of these knives have no markings. This small piece weighs 1.4 oz. or 39 grams. 6 1/4" open, 4 15/16" closed, 5 11/16” closed including the 2 rings. This would fit into any Maritime, Sailor, Nautical, Knife, Folding knife, Fid, Folk Art collection or display; or use as a desk accessory, paper weight, letter opener, or conversation piece. If you wish to take advantage of any of the issue resolution options available from the seller, you must have the business courtesy to discuss any potential issue within 3 days of receipt, and gain agreement with the seller prior to requesting a return through eBay, leaving feedback or initiating any online dispute process. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller.
