The land was largely swamp, the atmosphere heavy with moisture, and the climate very mild. Animal life had not appeared, but fossilized remains show that fish, insects, reptiles and shell fish were plentiful. In that period, ages ago, were deposited the myriad layers of organic matter which in the course of time became peat and, finally, coal. A territory with particularly favorable conditions for these deposits extended from what is now north-central Pennsylvania to northwestern Alabama, along the Appalachian Mountains, and, consequently, in it to-day are found coal deposits, the exploitation of which, in comparatively recent years, has resulted in the Appalachian Region, as it is called, becoming the foremost coal-producing area of America and, perhaps, of the world. In the center of that region, and enjoying the fruits of its most favorable conditions, lie the vast coalfields served by the Norfolk and Western Railway. This booklet is issued in the belief that a few pertinent facts about these coals will be of interest and value to those producing, selling and consuming fuel. Its purpose is to give some of the more important facts about the location, development and progress of the coalfields located on the Norfolk and Western Railway; to outline the kind, quality and uses of the various coals mined in those fields, and to mention some of the facilities for the production and transportation thereof.
