CENTRAL ASIA, Turgesh Qaghanate, c. 716-766, Large AE Cash, Semirechye, Tamgha

Description: CENTRAL ASIA, Semirechye (Zhetysu), Turgesh Qaghanate, c. 716-766 CE, Chinese-style cast AE fen, large size (24mm, 6.14gm) with center hole. O: Sogdian legend. βγy twrkys γ’γ’n pny (“Divine Turgesh Qaghan fen”). R: Tamgha resembling runic letter “t”, formed by crescent attached to rim of center hole. Kamyshev 24; Smirnova 1589ff. Brown and earthen patina. The Turgesh were a pre-Islamic Turkic confederation that emerged as an independent power after the demise of the Western Turks. The Turgesh established a qaghanate in 699 CE which endured until its defeat by the Karluks in 766. Suluk (c. 716-738) was the most accomplished Qaghan of the Turgesh, pressed by the expansionist Arab Umayyad Caliphate on the west and Tang China on the east. It is believed that the Turgesh coinage commenced during his reign. The tamgha on the reverse of the Turgesh coins is ascribed to the Black Clan, a component tribe of the Turgesh from which Suluk descends. Semirechye (Russian) or Zhetysu (Chinese) is the land of “Seven Rivers” in southeastern Kazakhstan, to the south and east of Lake Balkhash. TERMS OF SALE We combine shipping!
