Description: On May 12, 1948 Capital Airlines extended Air Mail Route 55 nonstop from Charleston to Atlanta, and also extended Air Mail Route 55 from the Tri-Cities (Bristol / Kingsport / Johnson City), via Asheville, to Atlanta. Asheville did not receive service until May 13. No official cachets were provided by the Post Office Department.This cover was one of only 121 pieces of mail carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 55 flight from the Atlanta, Georgia Airport Mail Facility to Charleston, West Virginia (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 55N23f.On June 1, 1961, Capital Airlines was formally merged into United Air Lines.
