HAMMER FILM for UNIVERSAL PICTURES Black and White Still, with the ORIGINAL MPAA APPROVAL STAMP AND UNIVERSAL ASSIGNED STILL NUMBER HANDWRITTEN on the verso. This is an original Hammer Film produced Still which Universal Pictures submitted to MPAA for approval, which in turn was returned to Universal as approved. THIS IS A UNIQUE ITEM IN THE AMERICANIZATION OF HAMMER STILLS. Based on my observations, as Hammer produced their Still sets, they often included alternative shots under the same Still number (think of a still camera film strip with several shots of the same basic image, from which only one or two shots would be selected to include in the formal set). For Universal and Columbia in particular, Hammer would then select their shots for each Still number and have a set struck with an "A" added to the end of the Still number. Sometimes alternative shots within the same Hammer Still number were used in the American sets, presumably if the original shot was rejected by MPAA or the distributor. And a few of the Hammer Stills were used without the "A" designation possibly because this was the only shot for this Still in the set. The set was sent to the US distributor for them to finalize their review, which included MPAA approval of each Still as was necessary at the time. When approved, Universal then created their own Still sets usually re-numbering the Hammer set to fit their needs. The re-numbering of the Stills was often first written on the verso of the MPAA-approved Stills which would form a Key Book of approved Stills. Except for The Mummy, Universal re-numbered their Still sets, while Columbia tended to use Hammer's production and Still number. While Universal was better at it, this process was not consistent from film to film, probably reflecting factors that changed each time through. A true photographic Still, not a computer generated print or scan. This is an Original HAMMER FILM for UNIVERSAL PICTURES Still used for the film on its original release.
