Description: circa 1920 oil on canvas entitled “In Birchmonte” depicting a summer landscape with ladies in bathing suits, reading and relaxing in beach chairs by Pudding Pond in Conway, New Hampshire!Painting measures 14 x 16 inches. Untouched condition. Unframed. The painting is signed on the back. The signature is original and I recognize it to be that of Ashcan School artist William Glackens (Am., 1870-1938).Glackens spent several consecutive summers in Conway, NH from 1919-24. His son, Ira Glackens, ended up living there. Glackens painted in this 14 x 16” size (see Pears and Grapes (Still Life, Fruit)).I don’t usually do this, but William Glackens was a very significant American artist and I reached out to someone I thought might be the official expert on his work. The reason for this was so that if I offered the painting for sale, I could tell any interested people what the expert said.As it turned out, this person with recognized scholarly expertise on Glackens was unwilling to look at or hear about any Glackens painting on the market. It wasn’t like she was mean or anything like that. She’s very nice.She was a Board Member of the late Ira Glackens’ Sansom Foundation. I’m not going to name names or repeat everything she said, but they have art that they want to sell, too. They had no catalog raisonne going. That’s actually the case with most artists, so it’s not weird, it’s just that I wanted to do any possible due diligence.This painting is very dirty. In-person, it looks more like picture 3 than the main picture. I'm sure the colors will really 'pop' once cleaned.Besides cleaning, the painting has minor paint losses to touch-in. Looks like there’s a piece of the inner stretcher bar missing (?) but I’d leave it because just framing the painting may cover that (indented) area anyway.I think I’ll end up shipping this USPS Registered Mail because for some reason it costs less to insure expensive items via that mode. It’s still Priority Mail, actually safer, and just takes a couple days longer.
