Description: This is a very old hand carved wooden dancing figure. These dancing figures are known as limberjacks, jigdolls, or jigger/jigging dolls. They were traditional home made toys in early America and in England well before then. This figure appears to be carved from an old chair finial or a repurposed turned table leg. Cleverly constructed, even the hands have carved 'fingers' and moveable wrists. I am not an antique appraiser so it's hard for me to guess his age, but it might be anywhere from the Civil War mid 1800s to as recent as 1920s. The limbs are attached with old metal nails, and his face, ears, and hair were drawn in pencil long ago. Painted black buttons, belt, and 'boots'. There is a small hole at the top of his head, perhaps a flexible wire was attached from which he could be made to bounce and dance on a board or tabletop.--> Important - Please Note from the photos and the video- being an old and primitive antique, his arms and legs have very limited movement back and forth, and one arm does not swing unless you move it, but you might be able to improve him with a few minor woodworking adjustments. Currently the range of motion of his limbs is limited with age, and he will not 'sit'- please see the VIDEO. Advanced age means his athletic dancing days are probably behind him. However as an antique collectible piece of American Folk Art, he would look wonderful on a little stand! This fellow has so much colonial homestead American character. I imagine he used to bring many smiles and belly laughs to children 100 years ago or more.
