Description: In the original box, Note: Bottom of box is missing. Box also shows wear from storage and use. This antique ship's navigation compass is by E.S. Ritchie Inc, of Pembroke, Mass. Ritchie began making marine bearing compasses for the U.S. Navy before the American Civil War and by 1860 had received a U.S. patent for the first successful and practicable liquid-filled marine compass suitable for general use. The design was improved upon when Ritchie included a floating card of nearly the same specific gravity as the liquid, an air-tight metallic case, and an elastic chamber that served as a diaphragm, compensating for temperature changes and resultant unequal expansion of the liquid and the bowl. The liquid-filled nautical compasses soon became a U.S. Navy and American Merchant Marine standard. This item is in a 6" square and 4 1/4" tall wood box with dove-tailed corners, with a 4" diameter floating compass. The compass is very well preserved with signs of age expected from use over time. Selling as is - needs some TLC This is a preowned item which may have various cosmetic blemishes, including signs of wear, dirt, markings, and other imperfections due to its previous use, age, movement, and storage.
