Description: Antique Japanese Porcelain Celadon Brush Washer With Cherry Blossoms Circa 1920. A very fine hand made scholars object that was used to wash the Japanese artists or calligraphers brushes in days gone by. Naturalistic in form with a delicate celadon green glaze and hand painted interior with blossoming cherry tree branches (prunus). The flowers are white, light pale orange and pink and curl around the bowls interior base. They are really beautifully painted. The artist thought to give depth to the design by 'sweeping' the branches around the inside. Very unusual naturalistic ribbed underside and foot rim. Not signed. 6 3/4" diameter x 2 5/8" tall. 1.4 pounds.
