Description: Incredibly scarce promissory note written for a penmanship course. It reads: "We the subscribers sincerely promise to pay [H Baker] one dollar for a course of twelve lessons in penmanship, stationary included." The portion in brackets is a bit of a guess. I can't quite make out what it says... Absolutely beautiful example of Spencerian method embellished calligraphy, later framed in a more modern frame with incredibly detailed birds and flourishes throughout. Gorgeous penmanship work by the artist. Mid 19th century, excellent condition. Framed and ready to hang. It's possible that the work was completed by the instructor as a form of a contract. Has not been examined outside of the frame but it does appear that a portion of the work. does extend beyond the back of the frame. Could be reframed. Dimensions are 10" by 11". If you have any questions or would like additional information, please don't hesitate to reach out.
