Description: A new crossover capacitor kit for one Acoustic Research AR 9 or AR 90 speaker. This replaces all the tweeter and upper midrange capacitors in one cabinet. For a pair of speakers, you will need two kits. Do you need these capacitors? Twenty years ago, when we began servicing these speakers, there didn't appear to be any need. However, perhaps ten years ago, we began to find capacitors manufactured by Callins Inc. installed in other AR speakers that were way out of spec. That created concern for the AR 9 and AR 90 speakers and we began finding them in these also. In recent years, customers have been requesting this kit for their speakers, particularly needing them for the tweeter section. How bad are these originals? Well, we are finally getting around to restoring a pair of AR-9s that have been waiting for our availability for many years. We just replaced all the Callins capacitors in the first cabinet and have taken measurements for all of those that are included in our kit. Well, they are not even close, horrible. Only one was within 20 % of what it should be. Here are the results:4 uf, measures 27.2 uf6 uf measures 13 uf 8 uf, measures 14 uf24 uf measures 28.5 uf40 uf measures 0.995 ufSince there are other components in parallel with these capacitors, you can't measure them while installed without the use of a very expensive capacitor bridge. However, facts are facts and they need replacement. Although, we include wire nuts as an alternative to soldering, I'll admit its hard to wire nut. Lay them on their back at waist high and solder them using a strong soldering gun. It helps if you have a small LED lamp that you can place in the cabinet for better visability. Cut the leads close to the terminals. A small screwdriver or pry bar can be used to pry the caps off the mounting board. There is no need to glue the new ones in place. However, even though some larger Callins capacitors may be found in the woofer crossover section, the impact does not appear to be as great. Now, if you have a late production pair of these speakers and find your capacitors to be manufactured by Sprague Electric, there is no need to replace them. We have never found a Sprague Electric capacitor to be out of spec. Superior quality vs. the original. Lifetime guaranty Will not deteriorate with age like the old style capacitors of years ago. What a task. Not easy to work inside the cabinet but I got it done. What a difference. When I purchased the AR9's and listened to them the first time I didn't care for their sound. Felt like something was just not right. The bass didn't blend well with the mids and highs. Now that the new caps are installed the frequency response is so much better.
