Robinet initially studied law, in Paris but switched to painting under the artists Ernest Messonier (1815 – 1891), Louis Cabat (1812 – 1893) and Felix Barrias (1822 – 1907). He travelled through Europe extensively, spending a large part of his formative years in northern Italy, Austria and Russia before settling in Vitznau, Switzerland. His landscapes are praised especially for their natural composition avoiding any one line of sight but rather, taking in the entirety of the vista in his painting. Robinet exhibited several of his landscapes in the 1878 World Fair, the third grand exposition of world trade and culture held in Paris May 1 through November 10. Many examples of the work of Paul Gustave Robinet can be seen on artprice.com, artnet.com, findartinfo.com, askart.com and arcadia.com besides the sites of leading auctioneers bonhams.com, sothebys.com and christies.com, Dealer’s note: possibly, unless a thick ground has applied to the canvas in preparation, this is a work on paper laid to canvas, we mention for the sake of clarity Presented in very good condition in a later frame, this painting looks fabulous displayed,,.
