Description: Model no. 237L, a 2-quart ice lip water pitcher, part of the 200 series in the Poppy Trail dinnerware line of pottery by Metlox released in the 1930’s. This model was one of the items available in satin glazed pastel colors; this one is peach. Measuring approximately 9”H x 8”W x 6”D, it weighs 2lbs 10oz. On the side is a decal/sticker/decoupage image of man standing next to a saguaro cactus, with a mug of beer in his hand and a sombrero on his head. Artist’s name on lower right side of image is Dillon. This is not original to the piece. This pitcher originally belonged to my great-grandmother. It’s unlike most anything else she had (think floral, ornate, cut glass, etc), so figured she kept it around for a reason (and then my grandmother and mother after that). My best guess is that the pitcher was purchased in Arizona as a souvenir when my great-grandfather drove the family from Shreveport, LA to visit his parents in Tucson in the late 1930’s. My grandmother was 16-17 years old at the time; I’ve heard tales and seen photos of the trip. Overall it remains in very good shape given its age. The color is excellent. The decal shows signs of wear and has a texture to it now. On the bottom are faint remnants of the Metlox stamp and maybe a price. There is a tiny chip along top edge and three hairline cracks (see photos). Also a small paint chip on the bottom but I see no signs of crazing in the glaze, inside or out.
