Description: Shipping 1920s Antique Totem Pole/Thunderbird/Bear/Human Clan Figures/All Original/FINE Measuring 8.25 in. tall including base (21 cm) this antique Totem Pole Carving is finely carved and well painted - all original condition. Wings are grove cut into back of Totem pole and while the pole is unsigned (typical of antique poles)the wings display two words "Banff" and "Canada" which is interesting as Banff is clearly inland from the style here displayed which is coastal Salish or Kawkuitl (Kwakwaka'wakw). The pole though only a bit over 8 inches tall has a monumentality to it - and depicts the Thunderbird, Bear and a human figure at the bottom. The bear denotes strength and health. Always found at the base of totem poles, the bear represents the fulfillment of bodily needs and that the flesh is the house of the spirit. It signifies vitality and courage. The bear is always respected and treated as a high ranking guest. However in our pole a human figure reigns supreme as the very bottom figure - unusual but not unknown. In this case literally the bottom man on the totem pole! The words indicated on the Thunderbirds wings may have been added after the carving was completed - perhaps by a merchant or maybe even the carver himself in an effort to make his carving more attractive to a shop owner in the Banff area of Alberta, Canada. There are precedents for this. Nonetheless a truly lovely antique carving with great presence and again in entirely original condition.
