Description: Lake Erie Maps & Prints An Authentic Antique Map: Not a Modern Reproduction! Free US Shipping on 5 or More Maps and Prints Description: It is an original antique copperplate map approximately 144 years old with original hand color and a centerfold as issued, labeled in German. It is from Spruner & Menke's Atlas Antiquus, published by Justus Perthes, Gotha 1865, a copy of the title page is included, see the pics. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pics. A great map for the scholar with lots of interesting detail that could be used in publications, since the copyrights have long expired. Size: The image area measures approximately 13 by 16 inches (33x40cm) on a 15 by 19" page (38x47cm) Condition: Very Good to Excellent for its age with original hand coloring, embossed copperplate marks in the margin and a centerfold as issued. Other than slight darkening along the right edge, it is very clean with a strong impression and vibrant color, printed on a heavy flexible nonbrittle page, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map. Karl Spruner von Merz (1803-1892) is best know for his historical atlases. He served most of his life in the Bavarian Army eventually reaching the rank of General, while also establishing a reputation as a scholar. His maps often focused on historical border changes, empire building and a lot of details that were appreciated and studied by historians, as well as military planners and scholars. This map is from his greatest and last work, which translates to the "Hand-Atlas for the History of the Middle Ages to Modern Times," see above, which was published along with Heinrich Thomas Menke (1819-1892), who was an avid geographer and publisher of geographical atlases. He was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and contributed to the editing and publishing through his contact with the Justus Perthes Geographical Institute in Gotha, Germany.
