Description: We are offering the Tanner's Travelling Map of New York with the Roads, Canals, Railroads, Counties, etc. Published by H. S. Tanner, Philadelphia & T. R. Tanner, New York. The date printed on the map is 1840, but it was published in this "book" form in 1841. (The map measures 22" x 29" and folds up to a size of 4" x 6") It folds up compactly to perfectly fit between the two covers. One small narrow section of the back side of the map along the left margin is attached to the back cover, which holds the map in place when it is folded so it remains firmly inside the covers. The map's legend indicates with symbols the New York State capital, towns, villages, forts, lighthouse, canals & railroads. The map also gives the height of mountains along the Hudson River and of the Catskill Mountains, and gives the lengths in miles of 12 canals and 10 railroads. **CONDITION** - the map, which is on sturdy paper, is in Excellent Condition for a map 184 years old! It does, however, have a couple of tiny "breaks" at the point where a horizontal & vertical fold meet (barely noticeable) - this is commonly found in old maps as stress is put on these points after much unfolding and folding. The front and back covers had separated from each other, but it has been repaired with acid-free archival mending tape.
