1790 The Poems Of Ossian, The Son Of Fingal - Early Philadelphia Imprint

Description: The Poems of Ossian, the Son of Fingal. Translated by James Macpherson and printed in Philadelphia by Thomas Lang. 1790, 502 pp, 8.5” x 5.75”, 8vo, full leather hardcover. In fair condition, with rubbing and wear to leather on boards and spine. Cracking to front and rear hinges. Framingham ex-library stamping and bookplate at front. Text block remains bound well with minor wear. Charlestown presentation inscription at top of title page. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce early Philadelphia imprint, comprising what is claimed as the poetical works of Ossian, an ancient Scottish poet that Macpherson supposedly collected through word of mouth in Scottish Gaelic prior to the 1760s. Contemporary historians now overwhelmingly view the story as a fabrication, with minor influence from traditional Gaelic poetry. Presentation inscription inscribed by Joseph Hurd (1752-1842), a Boston shipping merchant who was followed into the business by his sons. COLL1790AFJX-0324-aj1190
