Description: Unique & Unlisted 1789 Type George Washington Inaugural Button with "GW" in cursive centrally inscribed, with "Long Live The President" around the circumference in plain font. 1789, George Washington Inaugural Button, Type Not Listed in the Albert Catalog, Probably Unique, being a slight variation from the Albert W-10 and the DeWitt 1789-2 variation (2 Known). The only differences between this and those being the simple letter design along with the lettering being pressed inward, the combination of these make it unique. Provenance: Was discovered in Virginia on a privately owned field according to the previous owners. This is backed up by the corrosive surface of the button along with the missing shank. History: The inaugural Buttons were a series of buttons made by private vendors in correspondence to the election of the first president and war hero, George Washington. At the time the buttons were expensive, mostly bought by high ranking military personnel who fought in the Revolution and those with deep pockets and a deep patriotic feeling towards the new country. These buttons witnessed one of the largest milestones in the history of democracy and represent a very historic era. These buttons similarly to military buttons were many times saved decades on because of the personal nostalgia it brought to first generation US citizens. Today, most are lost to time, but some are found along the east coast and eastern states, such as this example. *I previously sold the button to somebody else, but they didn't have the money to pay for it.
