The "first trust-worthy record of life in the United States" (Howes) and one of the most notable acounts of the American Revolutionary period. Chastellux came to America in 1780, where he served with honour for three years as Major-General with the French troops under the Comte de Rochambeau. He developed friendships and acquaintances with many officers in the victorious revolutionary army, and during his tour, visited Washington, La Fayette and Jefferson. The work originally appeared in 1781 as Voyage de Newport à Philadephie [sic], Albany, &c., in an edition of only 24 to 27 copies. Several surreptitious editions followed, but the first authorized and enlarged edition was not published until 1786. RAREB1787OTUR - 12/22RAREB1787OUTR - 09/24 - HK62
